I was the Combined Federal Campaign rep for my squadron, so I was in a meeting for that. I turned off my cellphone because I didn't want to get yelled at by my 1st Sgt. for having my phone on. I had no idea for like an hour what was going on. Tried to get back on base in the GOV that didn't have a working radio. I thought we were in an exercise until I got to the gate. Made it in the clinic between the towers falling.
We had to process around 1,100 people to deploy, to somewhere we didn't know. A bunch of them went to Bangor, Maine and sat for 3 weeks before being sent back to Kansas.
The next day was spent outside our building because a bomb threat had been called into 17 buildings on base and the SFS didn't have enough personnel to cover the gate, flightline, and clear the buildings in a timely manner. The reserves had not made it to the base yet. What a beginning to a surreal few years.
