Are multiple climbing gyms popping up?
Lafayette has just one and it has been around for many years. They have also been really popular in more outdoor oriented locations for many many years.
I can see it being a fad in Louisiana but not in other areas.

Lafayette, Slidell, Shreveport, New Orleans and Baton Rouge all have indoor climbing gyms.
