Would you say that this is normal or something everyone should do?
It's not absurd. Plenty of normal people can do this. They just dont have the will power. Plenty go overboard, but it's very attainable. Only people who immediately assume mental disorder are likely those regularly making excuses for their own shortcomings.
It's crazy. Living in Louisiana, when I knew someone who did a Marathin or something, we thought it was crazy. Then I moved to The Woodlands where there is a much larger outdoor lifestyle and it's just normal. There is a Marathon and an Ironman race, plus many more shorter, within ten miles of my house. Hundreds of people local to the area do it every year. Are all of them mental? Or are they just determined and surrounded by a good influence. I went from eating, drinking, and being 20 lbs heavier 3 years ago to taking part in these races myself. I have a healthy well balanced life. But this gives me something to strive towards and stay mentally and physically strong.
