My son got a BS red card. Board thoughts?

Playing in a tournament and my 10yo son was quite literally attacked by a kid who grabbed him with both arms and threw one or two punches at my son. My kid yelled “get off me” and defended himself by pushing the other boy away. The attacker was immediately given red and escorted off field. The refs were booking the kid and speaking with the other teams coaches and then came about 5 min later and gave my son a red card too.
I can’t really find anything online about a situation like this. I guess my question is what can you do if you are grabbed and punched and would prefer not to get a red card and three game suspension for violent conduct? How can you defend yourself? Any other advice?

Tough situation. Obviously defending yourself is natural, I just wasn’t there to see the push or whatever. If he didn’t throw any punches back and was just getting the guy off him then the referees made a mistake and probably tried to be “fair to a fault”. Whatever sparked it could have warranted a yellow for each player but once a punch is thrown a red is given. Sounds like your son got screwed a little. If he kept his composure I’d praise that mental superiority and chalk it up to some BS. Were other parents like “wtf he didn’t do anything” too?

Pretty much just was pushing him back off him. He’s 10 so he’s not really violent and it was all he could do not to cry due to elevated emotions. He used to wrestle so I don’t worry about him handling himself physically but the violence is new for him.

There's probably some bullshite retaliation rule that carries an automatic red. Opposing coach probably bitched and threatened the refs until they gave in

Go talk with the tournament directors.
I'll never tell my kid not to defend himself, but there are consequences even if they arent deserved.

I understand your skepticism but like I said, he is 10. Violence is not in his blood at all. He can compete but he doesn’t have a mean bone in his body.

Would need video to assess the validity of OP account but a push should never be considered Violent Conduct. There's not a clear yellow offense either - Unsporting Behavior and the many offenses under it the closest, but still not a fit.
Was it a youth referee? Reds that young should not flow loosely unless it's explicit like a punch. Sounds like he/she got caught up in the emotion of the moment.

Ref was probably 20ish. AR was about 15. In 3 years of youth soccer I’ve only seen one other red card. Yes, to your point, my kid was grabbed, held and then punched in the face.
It’s not the end on the world and it was bound to happen sooner or later but I guess I find the lack of ability of a kid to avoid a red card while trying to escape being pummeled a little startling. I was expecting something more sophisticated in the interpretation of the rules beyond just “throw a bunch of red cards”.

There is nothing in the Laws that suggests what you described should warrant in duel reds. I'm hoping the ref just got confused and thought he/she (or young AR) saw an attempted swipe (as opposed to push). Otherwise it's an improper decision. As would be a yellow.
And I don't think U10 is too young to care about that kind of a decision. Kids should know that they can defend themselves without fear of punishment, and an experienced referee in his/her 20s should not be getting caught up in the moment in such a young age group. Reds should be a last resort.

I really doubt an experienced ref in their 20s are doing many U10 games.

Center ref didn’t call it originally but then made call about 5 min later after speaking with other coach and AR. I think they misinterpreted my sons efforts to free himself as. “Fighting back”. Which he wasn’t.

I've gotten one red in my life. I got intentionally raked down the back of my leg (enough to draw blood) behind the play. I grabbed the guy's arm, chest bumped him, and got in his face and ran my mouth at him.
It was a bitch move on his part, and shitty refereeing that nobody saw it (had four cleat marks from behind my knee down to my ankle), but my red was probably deserved.
No matter what happens, you retaliate and that's the risk you take.

The person who retaliates almost always get punished as bad if not worse than the initial offends because everybody always sees the retaliation.
However your kid is 10, is he actually being banned for 3 games? That’s the most ridiculous thing in your post
