Very different time. Woodward and Bernstein did not MAKE UP a story. They simply investigated what they could access, then reported on it. Closest example to that approach nowadays would be some of Sharyl Attkisson's reporting.

HOWEVER, the other difference is when concerns were raised, authorities both sides considered them. Had an Attkisson report on Feds surveilling journalists surfaced in Bernstein's day, it would have been the subject of major Congressional Hearings.

By contrast, in today's hyperpartisan environment, Nixon would have easily survived.

So, yes, Bernstein is a present-day hack. There is a reason Woodward's name comes first. But no, they did not set Nixon up. Nixon set Nixon up.
