Using cell phone in Mexico

I will be in Cancun for 4 days and was hoping I could get some advice for using my cell phone over there. In the past I have had to sign up for a separate program with Verizon when I would travel out of the country. Is that still the best way t do things or can I buy a prepaid SIM card over there?
For reference I have Verizon and a Pixel 2 XL.

Does Verizon have anything similar to the International Day Pass (AT&T)? That's what I use--it's a flat $10 charge for each 24-hour period of use that commences when you begin using your phone in the international country (data, text, or call--so basically anytime you turn airplane mode off). You're basically paying to use your normal plan because you're still bound by your plan's restrictions on the monthly data cap.

I have the same phone and provider.
Verizon offers the travel pass for $10/day. It works with no fuss. The only problem is that you're limited to I think a gig, and after your first 512 mb it slows down to 3g speeds. Double check me on those amounts. Whatever the amount was, I have bumped up to it quite a few times.

AT&T unlimited plan works in Canada and Mexico with no extra charges.
