Famed Swamp Pop pioneer and Boogie Kings singer, GG Shinn died today.
One of my favorite voices. I loved his melodies with Jerry Lacroix and the early Boogie Kings.

My mentor and hunting partner. One of the greatest blue eyed soul vocalist of all time along with LaCroix, Kimball and Doug Duffy.
I was honored when GG asked me to perform in his place at his club in Monroe when he was working his club in Alexandria. He taught me how to "sing through the top of my head", something I'd never heard of as young singer. I was blessed to share the stage with him on many nights and each and every time I was in awe of his abilities.
His range, pitch and melody were unsurpassed. When we would hunt together, I wanted to talk about the Boogie Kings or Chase......he wanted to talk about my line of work......hunting.
His work on Crying Man will always be one of the greatest soul performances.
GG was not only a legendary talent, he was a legendary person as well. He always took time with me and was willing to help me become a better singer.

I misspent a lot of my youth there.

It’s truly amazing how many great singers have been in the Boogie Kings.
Clint West, GG Shinn, Jerry LaCroix, Duane Yates, Gary Walker.... all incredibly talented
One of my favorite videos is if Jerry and Duane doing “you’ve lost that loving feeling”
Righteous Boogies

I was saddened to learn of GG's passing. I got to see him & the Boogie Kings perform many times growing up in SW La. He was probably the greatest white R&B singer ever. RIP

Great voice. That version they did of Harlem Shuffle is killer.

Ole G G
He had a fantastic voice, and he always had a terrific band behind him( always a collection of the bat players in the state, e.g.John Smith on sax)

He was the best White soul singer in America, but stayed in Louisiana most of his life. He used to come to the Dynasty Lounge in Monroe regularly. Sometimes with Jerry Count Jackson, who later became Jerry Lacroix and was great too. As a duo, they were the best in America. Better than Sam and Dave, but no hit records. I saw him early with the Boogie Kings and the Roller Coasters later on North 4th street in Monroe. When I later went to Baton Rouge, I saw them often. They played in Eunice a lot , he was great. His albums from the 60's are great. I will miss him.

My Dad used to play at the Dynasty regular back in the day. Said that's where he first heard GG and Lacroix. Fell in love with the Boogie Kings from the first time he heard them. Raised me on a steady diet of that stuff.

Who was your dad, I might know him. I played there also in the Monks and the NightTmers in the 60's through the 80's.

The name is very famliliar, what was the band's name?

He worked with a group called the Soul Kings but worked with several different "Smitty" bands. He was a drummer and Smitty would move him around all over town. One night he would be with Randy Meeks, the next he would be with someone else. He eventually wound up at the Electric Circus playing along to records before he moved to Nashville. He toured with Dolly Parton and worked for Loretta Lynn for 16 years. Funny thing, he wasn't really a country player. It paid the bills though.

Wish I'd been old enough to hear the Soul Kings in person. I do have some reel to reel of them that I need to get transferred before they disintegrate.
