Phones have become the primary computing device for the masses. My wife fires up her laptop once every few weeks at most because most of the information search, creation and consumption she needs to do she does on her phone and I think that's fairly common these days. Whether it's a good financial decision to buy an iPhone X vs. other less expensive is certainly debatable, but I don't think you can dismiss purchasing a phone as an impulse buy. Agreed. Considering how powerful phones are now, along with how often people use them, $30/month or whatever is nothing.
