Or I can just pay cash.
This is the only correct answer!
Again, any kind of financial card the merchant agreement includes verification by comparing to a picture ID.
If the merchant fails to verify, that is a violation of the contract and all transactions not verified can be denied reimbursement by the financial institution providing the card reader.
And again, PIN is an ID. It contains the term Identification in the acronym. Stop being obtuse on that. (your daughter is not financially responsible, there is an adult ID tied to her account)
Your phone is tied to all kinds of ID including your financial institutions which require photo ID. Your phone contains GPS tracking, data collection including voice and possibly fingerprint ID.
You are either very gullible, very dumb, or just being contrarian to deny ID is involved with every transaction except cash (and at some point the cash was tied to an ID transaction).
Your grocer should be reported for encouraging ID theft and fraud. They might even be in violation of a state/city/local ordinance that requires photo ID verification in order to try to prevent crimes like ID theft and fraud.

Notice which side of the counter the card reader is mounted on?
How about self check out?
YOU DO NOT NEED A PICTURE ID TO BUY GROCERIES.
