making the claim that had colonialism not happened, they'd have caught up to the modern world in 500 years is laughable. this is not Asia with dominant social hierarchies and monocultures. SSA had countless cultures, languages, etc.

You can add to that architecture. The only structures there prior to the EITC arriving were made from mud and straw with a few sticks shoved in. Meanwhile in just about any other part of the world people were building huge stone and rock buildings that have survived for centuries. Some of those other people had been doing so for thousands of years.

SSA has always been a shithole. It will always be a shithole.
