Im not afraid to admit I have shocked fish before years ago. Absolute easiest method of taking catfish bar none. We did it in a bayou when the water came up from a hurricane. You have to be quick though cause the cats are only stunned for a few seconds. In a big river like that I imagine you can get some nice ones out of there.
I had the plans to the ones green jeans uses but never got around to making one.

Pond management guys typically induce a low current to bring fish to the top so they can count them and verify species. After a little bit the fish "revive" and go back to swimming. They use this info to tell the pond owner what they need to add to the pond (be it other fish, food, fauna). They also tell the owner which fish need to be caught and which need to be released to keep a healthy pond.
