And for the record I'm not defending Russia here....I'm just asking a commonsense question that no one ever seems to spell out. And why should I care?? Did they affect the outcome of our election? That part has been answered and it's a resounding "NO". So why can't we just move on?

The answer is we don't know because it would be virtually impossible to try to "prove" that one way or the other by doing "after the fact" polling. Did it make a black and white difference, probably not. Did it have the potential to make a difference, likely.
The effect of the social media bots, to me, was negligible. But the DNC hacks had an effect, no doubt. The questions is, how much?

Whether they affected the election results doesn’t change the seriousness of the aggression.
To your question, it appears they were seeking negative info on Clinton in order to help Trump’s campaign. Plus using false websites and identities to spread phony info on social media.
