It's because of all those abstinence-only sex education classes in Mississippi. Kids have never heard of a condom.
It's not like condoms are common knowledge among-st every sexually mature child and sex education itself is largely unnecessary. It's not because kids in poorer societies are largely irresponsible and make poor decisions. It's not because as a society, we provide incentives for single motherhood.
It's because religious fundamentalists are blockading the knowledge of condoms and other preventives from reaching the minds of children.
*Insert anecdotal story about how sex education classes in the deep south taught that you should pray whenever you feel sexual urges rather than act on them in a responsible manner*
