Just because there is no glass on the ground, doesn't mean the glass was broken at the scene. I had a break in happen to me years ago and the police explained that it was common for the thief to use a blanket on the window when smashing it. One, it muffles the sound and two, it allows all of the glass, or at least almost all to fall inside. Both of these serve to attract less attention to the site.
