It's part of the uniform. They don't want to make themselves look attractive because they feel like it they would be defined by their looks instead of their brains or views or whatever.

I don't really care if they are attractive or not but what I find interesting is how miserable they often times look. Smiles seem forced and they are so serious about everything. I'm pretty sure a stick in the bum is part of that uniform, actually.
