Visited some family friends in the Bitterroot Valley about 10 years ago and noticed the accent. I wonder where that came from. Were Scandinavians a big part of the trapper/fur trade?

I’ve been coming out here since I was a kid, but I’m a Virginian.

I looked at a demographic chart and German was the biggest group at 29%. Norwegian came in at 11%.

There’s a lot of Irish here though. A Union officer tried to create a new Ireland around Butte, and the area remains heavily Irish. The locals there sound like they’re from Boston.
