If I leave the air off while I’m at work and at night when I don’t need the a/c, I can have a $60-$90 power bill. What am I doing wrong?
Moisture and air quality

Granted, the unit has to work twice as hard to get the temp down from say 86 down to 72.
No, it doesn't. Your a/c never runs twice as hard. It may run twice as long, but the only time it runs harder is each time it starts. Thus, running for longer and starting less times is technically more efficient.

Wouldn’t that equal out if it just ran constantly all day?
No, do not pass go. Do not collect $200.
