- received free books

- got into and drank in most of the Tigerland clubs for free
Which of these can they use to, say, help their parents pay a few bills?

I didn't realize getting an education meant somebody has to subsidize your parents.

Pretty easy
Look, if you want to say they should get straight paid that is one argument to be had. However, life is very easy for the actual athlete on scholarship. He may have family struggles, but that is outside what the school is promising the individual.

Oh yeah, of course I would have had to quit school if I had to help my parents plus pay for everything to keep myself afloat. That or I take out substantial student loans in order to make ends meet.
