8thyearsenior is on point, his post is spot on. Your time is much better spent in rmnp park than Denver.

Rafting trip that goes under the Royal Gorge bridge is incredible.
Getting tickets to the US Mint is like entering Fort Knox - we just went to the gift shop because we forgot to plan that part.
I agree with post about going through Boulder up to Estes Park, stay a night, and through RMNP.
Also, I would take the road up to Mt Evans, a little less crowded than RMNP and is one of the highest peaks like Pikes Peak and is closer to that Denver area you will be in. Stunning views up Mt Evans.
