rugby
Nobody's ever going to watch Rugby as a substitute.
We don't have the temperment to sit through 2 hours of non-action.
We had Rugby in 1890...
And Walter Camp thought it was so boring, he changed the rules.
Instead of scrums we got line of scrimmage and downs.
From then on, you couldn't just struggle at midfield for hours on end.
Americans would never adopt Rugby, that's why there was this massive push to evolve from it in the late 19th century...the founding fathers of American football knew Americans like excitement and not scrums for 30 minutes and the ball never moved...back to the rules back then (it was basically town ball)...even Rugby realized their game was boring and changed the rules.
