For a road trip it's hard to beat the southwest.
Though if you want to see niagra, west and upstate New York are neat and not as well known to most in the south. Same with the mountains of Pennsylvania.
But if you wanted bang for buck and low cost. Do this road trip.
Fly into Denver, Vegas, Albuquerque. (Probably Vegas as cheapest car rentals)
You'll see the Grand Canyon, painted dessert, new Mexico plains, the start of the rockies, the Rocky Mountains park. Then taking I70 which from Denver to grand junction is the most scenic interstate, you go to Utah. Make your way to zion canyon and Bryce Canyon. Then to the north rim of the grandcanyon before stopping at the hoover dam and a day in Vegas.
