Or they could be playing word games with the word "placed". If they approached someone who was already in the Trump campaign and bribed or coerced them to start passing info, then they technically didn't "place" him.

President Trump seems to know how much this "spy" was paid, so I'm guessing he has some pretty concrete information about the alleged spy.
