Its been said but can't be stressed enough, your worst dang case scenario is you buy a pair of pants or a shirt in Europe.
As said, wear your biggest heaviest shoes on the plane. I bring an extra set of shoes and a pair of flip flops.
Make sure ALL of your clothes can go together. That's the biggest key to cut down. I used to bring that shirt that only went with a certain pair of pants, then you'd wear the pants one day and they'd be dirty so then you can't wear that shirt until your pants are clean. Makes no sense.
If you are going to Italy during the summer and sweating that's one thing. But wearing a pair of pants 2-3 times between washings is more than fine for most of Europe most of the year.
One sweater or whatever that is neutral and matches everything. NO reason to take multiple of anything that is an outer layer.
