No question that false dichotomies are about the only way to to try to defend Trump on this one.

If ZTE was a typical benign corporation that would be one thing, but ZTE has been caught red-handed gathering surveillance. Moreover, they are a major competitor to American companies.

This hardly falls into the category of sky screaming. This is, on any level, a despicable act by Trump. In fact, contrary to your assertion, this has not gotten near the publicity it deserves.

It involved a country which is the U.S. greatest economic competitor, and a company that we had just censured over national security concerns.

Slice it up any way you want, this is, at its core, Trump taking a bribe. It is a treasonous act.
