Do not use the poison. I have not had a single experience where it didn't cause the rats to either die in the attic or in the wall.
Set traps for them, and make sure to close off all exterior entry points. Cut back big honking bushes, and get rid of piles of shite if they are near or next to your house. Also, go through your attic, and make sure there isn't anything in there that they want to eat
