You could've said your unicorn had skittles diarrhea on the way to the interview so you didn't make it on time and I would've believed that quicker than I believe this story.

I'd tell you to request a skype interview. Flying and all that without reimbursement is a huge red flag.

If you haven't already done so, I'd tactfully mention the expense of such a trip and simply suggest alternative options. As others have said however, you should take note bc this is likely a strong indicator of an organizational culture that you want no part of
