We stayed here last summer (within your budget) and never felt unsafe.
First I'll say that we aren't much in need for luxuries in our accommodations and like you almost always prefer a location and full kitchen over some other amenities so this worked. Easily walkable to the Common, full kitchen, washer and dryer in the building (not the unit), very accessible to shopping , dining and multiple T stations.

Sorry..just read that, yeah for something for 4 people that's much different. Our studio was great but not for 4 ppl unless you rented two units in the same building but then youre closer to $400/night for both.
