There were a bunch of factors. But the biggest is that its an organization that feeds on the weaknesses and insecurities of people. They strive to make you feel like you're never doing enough, which breeds feelings of inadequacy. Over time, that becomes a very powerful tool in controlling folks.
ETA: And yea, I absolutely despised going door to door....but you are pressured into doing it.

It's requirement in the sense that they make you feel guilty if you don't do it, or even if you don't do it enough.
