If women are doing it more often than men and it's a new thing relatively speaking, what do we think could explain that? Is there something socially going on that makes it more likely?
Here's one theory. I think a lot of walls between students and teachers have broken down over the years. My nieces and nephews had their teachers' cell phone numbers programmed into their phones. That absolutely blew my mind. I couldn't have even imagined calling my teachers at home when I was in high school. Just seeing my teachers away from school at a restaurant or the store was a little odd back then. I knew they all had lives away from school, but it was still weird to see. Now they text each other, are friends on Facebook, and share things with each other I'd have never dreamed of. There's an intimacy already there.
But I still think the instances of it happening haven't really increased. Parents find these text messages on their kids' phones, or see something on Facebook, or a racy text gets shared among friends, and suddenly it's the talk of the school. Those things just couldn't happen 20+ years ago. You'd hear rumors, but they rarely got beyond just rumors because there was no way to prove it.
