But this is reality. There is a myth that the civil war wasn't fought over slavery (because some people can't be bothered to read the state by state declarations). Your father in law's behavior is upsetting but hardly surprising...nor is the casual way that you remark about it. It doesn't sound like you informed your father in law that his behavior is unacceptable after all...

Meh...Let them do it. This is who they are. You need to come to terms with the fact that this is who you share your politics with. These folks are representative of conservative America or so they claim.
