I've seen it first hand. A person can be in it so deep that they convince themselves that nobody cares if they are dead. Sometimes just showing someone that you give a frick is enough.

Yes, it's a touchy situation. Best thing to do, is to get the person professional help asap.

I try to treat acquaintances and coworkers like this every day. You most likely never know what people are going through
