It is astonishing that a state would even think about incarcerating someone for the rest of his or her life when 2 jurors disagreed with the verdict.
All capital crimes in Louisiana, as in all those crimes that have the death penalty or life in prison as a sentence, currently require a unanimous jury verdict to convict.

So you are saying that an individual cannot be sent to prison for the rest of their life off a 10-2 verdict?
A 60 year prison sentence is often a "life sentence" for practical purposes.

So the guy who got 20 or 30 years for a non-capital crime when 2 people on his jury voted not guilty are just supposed to cheer about the justice system in LA because of this? Who's the dumb arse?

As they should since you're sending then to death.

Actually, only cases in which the death penalty is a potential sentence require a unanimous verdict
all others are 10-2
Crimes that you can get life in prison if found guilty by a 10-2 verdict:
Second Degree Murder
Aggravated Rape
Aggravated Kidnapping
And while you need a unanimous verdict of First Degree Murder to move onto the death penalty phase, if only 10 people find the defendant guilty, he will still be sentenced to life, there is just no sentencing phase
