IRS Letters and ID theft........?

Last year I received a letter from the IRS saying that someone had filed taxes under my SSN. Fortunately, I had filed for and extension and we were able to take care of everything. My accountant said it was probably an honest mistake where the numbers were transposed. Well, my wife just received the same letter so I don't see this as a coincidence.
Has anyone else dealt with this recently?

Happened to me 2 years ago. Call IRS and inform them you will need a personal PIN number for you and your wife (she may have to make the call for herself). Mail your taxes along with an affidavit stating your ID theft (can be found on IRS website), until you receive the PIN number (may take 1-3 years before you receive the PIN, LOL). I received mine this year and e-file was accepted in literally 3 hours.
I also went to website of each of the 3 credit agencies and froze my credit accounts. It only takes a few minutes to unfreeze the accounts from your phone if you need to borrow money.
It's unfortunate this happened but seems to be very common these days. Good luck!

Yeah we done all of that last year and now doing it again this year. Just makes me wonder if someone we know has hijacked our information. Frustrating to say the least.

Happened to a friend in St Louis two years in a row. After the first time they got the pin and that was supposed to be the safeguard going forward. But it did not keep it from happening the next year.
Have not discussed it with them recently, so don’t know about 2017.
They use an accountant and apparently she was hacked.
Do you file your own or hire someone to do them?

Its going to be a long time to get it straight if the thief already got a refund and you are also due money. The IRS is slow!! You might want to call your congressman or senator to get them to grease the skids.

Happened to my wife a few years ago. Someone used her ssn as a dependent on their return. She had to file a police report, then almost jump through hoops to prove her identity. Each year we receive a PIN number to use with our return.
