Why is that? Saban and Fisher came in Booty's sophomore season. He had two more years of eligibility when he declared for the draft.

Don't think that's the case. The way I understand it, it doesn't start when you enroll. You actually have to start attending class.

Whatever he did in January 97 definitely started the clock, you can see on the rosters he was listed as a sophomore in 99 and a junior in 2000 (Saban & Jimbo’s first year).

I suppose he could have also attended class early in that semester, before having to report to camp with the Marlins. If you recall that was also the same semester Abram enrolled.
