Unless you’re using old growth cypress, it will rot. And if you’re building a fence out of old growth cypress you’re LOADED!
Don’t use pine, it warps and looks like hammered dog shite. Get cedar boards from a local lumber yard (not a box store) and it will last a lifetime. Don’t like the graying, stain it.

I was at Lowes and Home Depot today and took a look at some wood. They had a few cedar boards that were finished on one side and rough on the other, and the finished side looks really nice (much nicer than “fence board” cedar). As you said, box store, so when I say they had a few boards, they literally had 3-4 boards.
I’ll have to go check out one of the local lumber yards, but I think getting some nice real cedar boards and staining/sealing them will be exactly what I’m looking for.
