I bought a de-thatching rake. Talk about a workout. Think of the of the sweeping motion used during curling, except on grass.

Did make a huge different in grass quality on the areas I was able to get done. Realized quickly I wasn't going to be to do my whole yard and bought the pull behind from HD. In hindsight I'd probably just rent a de-thatcher as you might only use it once a year.

I can't tell from the picture but if you've never done it and don't always bag you clippings, and it isn't new sod then yes I'd imagine de-thatching would be good for it.

I called every place I could think of in Lafayette and no one even knew what a de-thatcher was. I ended up ordering the greenworks from amazon.
