Even bottom tier programs like Kentucky or Illinois destroy teams like Wofford or the Citadel.
What's NDSU's winning streak against the P5 again? The gap has closed. Didn't VT get beat by William and Mary a few years back too? There are plenty examples of P5 teams losing to FCS teams, particularly the turn of the millennium. It happened before Appy, it happened after Appy, will probably happen again sometime this year to some scrub P5 team. There are FCS teams that aren't even that good in the FCS that have notched wins against a P5 team.
The only reason it got the pub it did is because Michigan is a big name in the CFB landscape with a rich history and was preseason #5, but they finished with 4 losses. Appy State was the 2x defending champion and won it again that year. I get why it was a big deal at the time and don't get me wrong, it's still a major upset but at the season's end it lost a lot of luster
