Figure a bunch of 0's in with the remainder living to 80 and the outcome is around the 30's. Like 0 + 80 + 0 + 80 = 160; 160/4 = 40. Add another 0 and you get 160/5 with a 60% infant mortality rate.
Half or more infants died prior to modern medicine. The surviving remainder lived to old age generally. It wasn't a bunch of people dying in their 30's.
