Not really true in the Southeast.

More commonly, as someone else said, it's a church of anecdotes and how to be a nice person while expanding your business network.

I attend a very Christ-centered UMC church, which coincidentally is in a pretty moneyed area. UMC is pretty blatant about sending progressives to progressive churches and more "conservative" (not necessarily politically, but often the case) to the more traditional congregations.

It's pretty depressing to witness, and puts congregants in a bind. I don't want to put politics above faith, but I also don't want to support an institution that does so (and particularly putting politics which I think are at times at odds with Christianity above the faith).
