I believe that's a requirement for being an armorer. I couldn't do that job and I was a commo NCO at one point in my career.

They taught us in armorer school how to fail any weapon. That's no joke.

The arms industry must have deep tendrils is people are STILL believing this nonsense. The M4 is the best weapon system in the world and is used by people who have the choice carry pretty much anything they want to carry. The AR10 style rifles are also all the rage.
We don't need new carbines or service rifles. If anything, we have too many.

Hand to God, I never used anything but q tips during basic and Afghanistan. Never had an issue. I wasn’t kicking in doors though, so minimal rounds were cycled through overseas.

Never had to clean the barrel?

At some point, you just flip your collar, turn your weapon in, and hit the beach.

I know a few infantry guys who saw combat. They hated the round. Despite the media making it sound like the .223 round was extremely powerful, there are reports of soldiers shooting guys 3 and 4 times and watching them run away.
This can and does happen with larger rounds too. The anecdotal experience of a couple of infantry guys is not evidence of effectiveness.
The 5.56 is lethal, but it has its compromise like any other round. The difference between 5.56 and other rounds is that the 5.56 has a huge advantage weight that is not in any way offset by a lack of lethality. 5.56 has killed a lot of people. Sure, a 12 ga slug might be "more lethal" at 10 feet, but dead=dead. More importantly, the 5.56 has enabled more covering fire and maneuvers than 12ga or 308 ever could.

Come to think of it, I may recall an old buddy of mine that may have said the same thing. He was a small arms repairer before reclassifying into my MOS which was 74B at the time, now 25B, when he reenlisted.
My father, on the other hand, is retired Army and a Desert Storm vet. He was in a support battalion part of the 24th Infantry division that was a third shop. He told me they used to take M16s and M60s that were in disrepair to the range and shoot the shite out of them for fun. I would have loved to do that for a day.

I had heard the reason we switched to the .223/5.56 in Vietnam was so that we wouldn't kill many enemy combatants. If we wounded them, then it would take 1-2 others to carry him out.
This is the other half of the mythology of the m16. One half says its virtually a WMD, the other says it can't kill shite.

Well, the art is in knowing how far you can push it.

I'm an a-hole. You get to tell me to clean it again exactly one time.

I'll take your word for it. I still have a little confidence in my armorer power. I'll show you that dirty pinky tip and give you some CLP.
Posted on 3/5/18 at 9:34 pm to MrCarton
Probably not.
We need a new caliber. 300 Blackout is useless. Shooting paper and people is exactly the same in all regards because Indians know stuff.
Now you're spun up.

You're getting a weapon, one way or another.

For decades, troops have been complaining about the limitations of the M16 rifle and M4 carbine, both of which are hindered by the same flawed operating system that makes the weapons jam easily.
Complete bullshite. The DI gas system is not a problem at all.
DI gas system myth.
The M855A1 ammo also cures a lot of the terminal ballistic issues of M855.
