If our gymnastics team are SEC champions then what is the point of the SEC tourney in two weeks? My fiancée and I are headed there from Nashville in a couple of weeks and she asked.

Think of it like basketball. You have regular season champs and tournament champs I would assume.

The Regular Season SEC Champion has only been an official thing since last year. It was started so the regular season will have more meaning. Every team participates in the SEC tourney, so this is a way to recognize regular season performance.

Now that there is a regular season champion the tourney does not seem to serve much purpose. The teams which will get invites to the NCAA tournament (? is that what it is called) are virtually already decided by RQS. I believe all 8 SEC teams have made it recently.

The benefit might be that it provides a mini Super Six environment and individual SEC champions are crowned in each event.

I mean, couldn't you say that about almost every sport though? Men's basketball, women's basketball, softball, baseball, etc. all have a post-season tournament that in the grand scheme of things doesn't mean a whole lot.

The old guard still sees the tourney as the “true champion”. And I get it...top four teams head to head with same judges. Agreed it’s like a Super Six, and it will also be good practice for future post season format...win or go home!

In the other tournaments the the 2 or 3 wins a team gets even without tourney title could be the difference in getting in, especially if they defeat a high RPI team. Conversely bubble teams can drop from contention with a bad loss. No such thing generally exists in gymnastics, but it may only occasionally happen.

Interestingly enough there are some fans of other SEC gymnastics teams who used to dominate the SEC who are very salty and referring to LSU's regular season titles as "fantasy titles" or saying they don't matter. It's amazing how fans of certain teams get when they are no longer really relevant anymore.

Good practice, plus it would be considered away meet right? So if some team needs too boost their away scores for RQS, it gives them that opportunity.

The away meet score is another good point.
