Just don't listen to him (tdcline). Obviously, his inferiority complex runs deep. I served for 4 years. Mostly because college didn't appeal to me and to get out of my hometown. It was a good experience.

You meet some clowns, but you do with every career/profession. It's not like every military member is lining up precision points on a laser. Most of the time is down time, where you are doing mundane things. The good thing is basic training usually weeds out the numbskulls in a couple weeks but a few slip through the cracks and make it to permanent party.

I’m not sure what branch you were in but that doesn’t sound accurate at all. We had very little down time. I’m sure a lot of that depends on the branch and unit you were in. If you’re on a ship in the Navy, I could see there being a lot of down time (but I’m not really sure there either).

Maybe national guard has a ton of downside or something, idk. but it’s bullshite to listen to some of these guys with absolutely no experience in these situations present that they have knowledge of them. We had some bad recruits get through the cracks and get into boot camp but most of those washed out within a month.

Some of us have friends that won’t ever return home or came home in a box and I’m not going to listen to some posters basically call them dumbasses who couldn’t get into college. The standards in place right now actually make it really difficult to put kids in. I think a lot of guys think people just walk into a recruiting station and you’re shipped off 2 weeks later. There’s a ton of medical hurdles, background checks, etc to get through before you’re even able to attend boot camp.
