Question - What good does it do to have an officer with a gun who is shot dead? Can the dead officer help the kids? Probably not, right? So it's probably good for an officer to try to figure out WTF is going on so he can best assist.

You assess the situation in 10 seconds, not 3-4 minutes. There's no reason the school resource officer shouldn't have been the first law enforcement officer to engage.
