Defend yourself from what? What if the government is coming after me with aircraft? Should I be allowed to purchase a Stinger missile?

Great question, although I'm not sure how relevant it is to the current conversation about semi-automatic long rifles and whether or not civilians should be allowed to own them.
I'd imagine its almost impossible to create a law that's future proof, no telling what sort of technology will come out that throws these general principles for a loop.
