We rented DVC points from Daves DVC rentals (legit) and saved a ton. Got a room at the Boardwalk for the same price as it would have cost us to stay at a Moderate resort if we booked through Disney. Great deal to rent points. Notice that you don't get house keeping though, they will only come on the 4th day to change trash and bring new towels. If you stay to an 8th day I think they do a full cleaning then.

Also, these rooms are different than the hotel rooms in that there are none that have two queen beds in one room. You will always have a queen bed and a pullout sofa as your options unless you want to go big and rent a 2 BR but then that is super expensive. Even the 1BR have the one bed in the BR and a sleeper sofa in the living room area. So if it is important to have two queen beds this could be an issue.

When do you want to go? I see people saying they couldn't get the Boardwalk at 11 months out but I got it at 10 months out during the busiest time of the year. May depend on the type of room you want, I just needed a studio and had to get the preferred view which was slightly more but they were out of the standard view.

Go to Dave's DVC Rentals and use their cost calculator to see the cost of various resorts and then fill out a request form for the one you want. It is a $112 deposit that they keep if they can fulfill your request but they apply it to your total cost. If they can't fulfill it because it isn't available then you get the money back. So only request if you are prepared to commit and you have to pay in full once they tell you it is available.

Edit: I see you want to go in October. I am guessing Boardwalk is more in demand in October than December (the busy time I mentioned I am going) because of its proximity to EPCOT and the food and wine festival going on. So makes sense that it goes super fast during that festival.
