I discovered a couple things, first, Android messages did automatically backup my SMS history, I didn't need any third party apps. Android/Google really has this backup thing down. You reset the phone and it gets everything restored to exactly how it looked before the restore.

Make sure all your photos are backed up in Google photos, and make sure your phone is set to backup to your Google account.
I think that's it

save any text attachments (aka pics) that you hvaen't just in case android doesn't back up the SMS that you want.
everything else is just a matter of re-installing apps and putting passwords back in.
android *used* to automatically reinstall all the apps you had before but honestly i'm glad it doesn't now. half that shite i wasn't using so why have it automatically dump a bunch of shite apps back onto your phone?
i always go to play store/my apps and browse through it and pick about 20 or so to download.
if there are a few i missed its just what..a 20 second download to get them back?
