The party doesn't nominate someone to run for office, they may give their blessing but anyone can run.
That said, a better candidate was in the race but no one voted for him.

Obviously you don't understand how the Louisiana Open Primary System works. Neither party nominates a candidate. Now the party might recommend a candidate, but they do not nominate one candidate.
