It’s funny you brought up NYC, some of the ACTUAL strictest gun laws in our country (not just a talking point, which we know for a fact you’re prone to fall for). Record lows.
Not saying it’s the only reason (relatively strict gun laws), it’s a complicated effort, but it’s hard to argue it isn’t having an impact.

You said there were no strict laws anywhere?
NYC’s drop is largely credited to factors other than gun laws, including having the highest concentration of LE of any US city.
Can you tell me how an AR15 is functionally diffferent than any other semi auto rifle?
