Seemed like Hess was hung out to dry last night

And/or PM was sending him a message about being a starter vs relief pitcher. Either way, it was difficult to watch. Yes, I know the season is early. Geaux Tigers!

I'm sure he wanted the opportunity to try and get out of it. Had he been taken out earlier people would have bitched about not giving him a chance. Its early. We have plenty of time to find out if he has what it takes. I personally would like him in the pen though

OR.....
Maybe he was on a pretty strict pitch count, being it was game 1 of the season. Barring injury he was probably going to pitch around 70-80 pitches no matter what. Its part of the process of getting starting pitchers arms ready for April/May and June. You know, when this team will be playing meaningful games.
You people make WAYYYYYYYYYY too much out of one game and one start.

You could tell from the first inning his control wasn't there but sometimes it takes a few innings for a pitcher to settle down. He just never did.

As bad as we need starting pitching, I agree with keeping him in the pen.

Will you still think that if he throws 6 scoreless innings next week?

“Yes, I know the season is early.“
Pitch count or not - you pull a pitcher when he doesn’t have his stuff and is getting hammered by an ACC bottom dweller in ND.

Hess ran his mouth let him back it up.

Will you agree if he doesn’t?

Yes pitcher is obviously struggling but lets leave him out there to pitch so some magical number and cost the team a game..... totally makes sense

Ha - Even running his mouth seems more like a relief pitcher.

Please tell me how losing that game last night will stop LSU from accomplishing a single thing that would like to accomplish this season.

Plus the whole psychology behind it - why tear your guy down the first series of the season - wreck his ERA and flush what otherwise might have been a winnable game. Seems like we have a bunch of unknown pitchers we could have given a couple of innings to.

Neither.
For all the positives PM may have as a coach, his main Achilles Heel is gauging when a pitcher has it that day or doesn’t. It’s like he lacks a feel for it even after all these years.

So the fans are turning on the best arm on the LSU staff after one game? You can easily tell the football fans on this board. Everybody must go 2-3, never have a bad outing, and win every game, or they suck.

Because Paul wants to see if Hess can work his way out of a tough situation. He wants to see what his velocity looks like after 80 pitches.
We go through this every year. Paul uses the first month and every midweek game to learn his team and to have his team learn about themselves. That way there are no surprises come the SEC play/the post season.
Theyve seen and done it all by then. Calm down and enjoy the ride

You said it right here. Everyone behind Hess is unknown. So you let your best guy try to work his way through it, because who knows what you will get behind him.
His ERA is not shot for the season. It was one damn game....ONE.

quote:Actually you have no idea if it will, at the end of the season could the committee pick a team over LSU with a slightly better record? Saying each loss doesn't hurt is just sugarcoating it. LSU should have had someone warming up as soon as Hess walked the 2nd batter of the inning, he struggled in the first and second so it was a sign. No reason to leave him in as long as they did.

It certainly didn’t help it. I think ND had 8 runs in three innings, and he couldn’t finish three. I’m sure they wanted him to get through the fifth or sixth innning. Maybe, they should have just left him in there to accomplish that objective too.

Yes I do know. A loss to ND game two of the season will have zero...and I mean absolutely ZERO..impact on LSU when it comes to post season play. If they finih top 5-6 in the SEC they will be hosting a regional. If they aren't hosting a regional it will be for plenty more reasons than losing to ND yesterday.
Do you remember midweek losses last season that included McNeese and UNO? Did that stop LSU from being a national seed?
