They're following the same model as Alabama did after the Bear.
Besides Gene Stallings - who was at Alabama for way too short of a tenure - Alabama hired joke after joke after joke for their head coach.
Kiffin, O, and Sark were all part of the Carroll tree that USC didn't want to give up. Helton may have seemed different, but he coached with Kiffin who coached with Carroll.
They need to make an Alabama-Saban type of hire. Find someone with success who has zero connection to USC and zero connection to Pete Carroll.
